Nioh 3 Review: Does Team Ninja’s Latest Action RPG Live Up to Its Legacy?

Team Ninja’s latest installment in the Nioh franchise arrives with ambitious aspirations to cement itself as the studio’s definitive action RPG experience. However, in pursuing this lofty goal, Nioh 3 appears to have sacrificed some of the distinctive character that made its predecessors so compelling.

The series has always been known for its challenging combat encounters and intricate loot systems that blend souls-like mechanics with looter elements. Nioh 3 attempts to refine and expand upon these foundations, introducing new features and mechanics intended to elevate the overall experience.

Yet despite these additions, the game struggles to recapture the magic that resonated with players in earlier entries. The effort to create a more comprehensive package seems to have diluted certain elements that gave the franchise its unique identity. What once felt fresh and purposeful now comes across as somewhat derivative in execution.

The core gameplay loop remains satisfying for veterans of the series, with demanding boss encounters and rewarding combat encounters that test player skill and patience. However, the overall design philosophy appears to favor breadth over the focused excellence that characterized its predecessors.

Nioh 3 is undoubtedly a competent action RPG with plenty of content to occupy players for dozens of hours. But in attempting to be everything to everyone, it loses some of the specific charm and focused design that made the franchise stand out in an increasingly crowded genre.
