Ivy Road Studios, the independent developer behind the puzzle-adventure game Wanderstop, has announced its closure just over a year after launching its debut title. The shutdown comes after the studio exhausted efforts to secure funding for its next project, Engine Angel.
The studio, which brought together veteran talent from acclaimed titles including The Stanley Parable, Gone Home, and Minecraft, faced significant financial challenges in its bid to fund its sophomore game. In January, Ivy Road revealed that funding attempts had failed, leading to widespread layoffs across the team.
Despite the initial promise shown by Wanderstop’s release, the developer could not maintain momentum or attract the necessary investment to continue operations. The inability to secure backing for Engine Angel ultimately proved unsustainable for the small independent studio.
This closure represents another setback in an increasingly challenging landscape for indie developers. Rising development costs, competitive market saturation, and tightening venture capital investment have made it difficult for smaller studios to survive beyond their first title, even when staffed by experienced industry veterans.
Ivy Road’s shutdown serves as a sobering reminder of the financial pressures facing independent game developers in today’s market, where even talented teams with strong pedigrees can struggle to maintain long-term viability.
